Art Collector Starter Kit II

I brought a couple friends to Corey Helford's Circa gallery for the Art Collector Starter Kit show. We had a fangirl moment with Brandi Milne

one of those nights...

 April 13th, no one was available to play with me, but that doesn't mean I won't have an adventure on my own, especially on one of those nights in Culver city where all my favorite galleries are having an opening at the same time. I started at LeBasse Projects for Trusto Corp's "The Future is Blight" show featuring an installation that blanketed LA county with care packages for poverty.

 Polaroids of the care packages spell HELP across Los Angeles.

 Trusto Corp collaborated with Shepard Fairey, London Police, and David Flores for Trusto Cereal flavors.

 Next door at Thinkspace was Meggs' "Heavenly Creatures," filled with bold colors in motion.

 Of course, I loved the phoenix.

 Blum and Poe, around the block was exhibiting in their expansive space "Arhat" by Takashi Murakami. I originally thought I missed opening night since I saw posts from the VIP opening, but I was very happy to discover I was wrong.

 I was obsessed with this metal sculpture. For an idea of how big it was, the smallest skull was a little bigger than my own head.

 At Corey Helford Gallery, Kazuki Takamatsu's "Japanese Ideology of Puberty" show was mind blowing.

The details and textures and size of everything very much made my jaw drop.

 After all that, I treated myself to some Cool Haus ice cream.

Zero to Sixty...

The Corey Helford 5 year anniversary show tonight looks amazing! I'm already in love with the Craola piece.

at In the Nursery...

January 29th was the opening for 'In the Nursery' at Corey Helford Gallery. The group show was packed with whimsical art and artists. These were a few of my favorite pieces: Mike Stilkey's 'The Owl is Wary' painted on discard books...
Tom Bagshaw's digital painting, 'Long Walk Home'...
...and David Stoupakis' incredibly detailed oil painting 'The Girl Who Sat Too Long.'

Vernissage & Vertigo...

So, I have been quite distracted and I know I've been a neglectful blogger. Happy 2011 none the less and here's what is in store in the Culver City Arts District the first weekend of the year:
Vernissage 2011 at LeBasse Projects, and Alex Pardee's Vertigo at Corey Helford Gallery. Both open January 8th.

Vernissage 2011 is a preview group show for LeBasse Projects. The gallery blog says "Vernissage will present work from artists including Yoskay Yamamoto, Andrew Hem, Mike Stilkey, Shark Toof, Herakut, Edwin Ushiro, Melissa Haslam, Thomas Doyle, Nate Frizzell, Ken Garduno, Matt Haber, Eric Fortune and more."

Vertigo has actually been in my calendar for a few months already, but with Alex's popularity I don't even know if I could make it into the gallery opening night.

at Fashionable Aftertaste Without End...

First of all, I had to stop by Yoskay Yamamoto's closing reception for Familiar Strangers. The print release for the 'Four Seasons' series was Saturday night.
Natalia Fabia's show was fabulous, in every sense of the word. The paintings, the costumes, even the cake was gluttony for the eyes.
I am enamored with the details in "Balloon Party of Birthday."
"Gate of Girl of Yoga" was my favorite piece. All the paintings were oil on panel.

Number 3 in my Art Angels series is Natalia Fabia because this Saturday is her solo show at Corey Helford Gallery. I plan on roping in at least two people to go see it with me. Teasers already have my eyes drooling.

my heart shall not fear...

Saturday night, I picked up my friend Rhea and went to Corey Helford Gallery for Brandi Milne's solo show opening, 'My Heart Shall Not Fear.' This show has a darker theme than her previous shows, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Brandi was very popular at her show. I'm sorry to have kept her a while for this sketch. It's one of her signature bunnies!

for My Heart Shall Not Fear...

I have decided to start a series of simple drawings. Partly for practice and partly for admiration. My concept is the turn the artists into art. This series will be called "The Art Angels" and my first sketch is Brandi Milne because her solo show at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is opening this weekend...

i didn't go to the opening, but the show is up until january 9th...

rainy gallery hopping...

a couple friends and i bundled up saturday and braved the rain for a night of gallery hopping. first we went to Dan Goodsell's Mr. Toast mini art show at Monkeyhouse Toys in Silverlake.
this was one of our favorites...then we had dinner all the way in Long Beach so we could drop off a friend at the Long Beach airport. after that we headed to Culver City. it was opening night for Scott Belcastro at LeBasse Projects.this is a detail of the piece Snow Castle. the textures on his paintings were mind boggling.

we stopped by the Whole 9 Gallery on the way to Corey Helford's Multiplane group show. photos of the works at the Multiplane show do not do them justice. a ridiculously impressive list of artists were given a panel, 2 glass panes, and a frame to layer the final product. a lot of the artists showed up for opening night; it was pretty festively crowed in the gallery.
one of our favorite pieces was by Nathan Spoor. he took advantage of the layers really well. i also really liked Glen Barr's use of the transparency.
