lotus box: you mean the world to me...

i'm loving the lotus box shape, so i made another design for you to use. have fun!1. cut out the shape, don't forget the slits
2. place the printed side face down and bring up the fans to meet each other
3. lock one petal over the fans, fill your box, and over the first petal lock the second petal.

for personal use only, not for commercial resale. thank you for your respect.

valentine '10: cookies...

"what are you doing?"
"i'm attempting to bake cookies."
"aw, you're at home being domestic?"
"yeah, i'm failing though."
my friend susan called me after i baked 3 batches of french macarons that left me quite disillusioned...

batch #1: burnt, never put delicate batter on the bottom rack.
batch #2 & #3: flat, no little macaron feet :( they seemed cooked, and they were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside so i assembled them with my chocolate ganache anyway. a few hours later the shells became super sticky from the sugar and stuck to anything they touched.batch #4: viennese almond cresents. well, i gave up on the french macarons and decided to go in a different direction. by the way, i love silicone baking sheets.
so, after hours in the kitchen and researching what went wrong with the macarons, my family and boyfriend are getting viennese almond crescents for valentine's in the lotus boxes. good thing i practiced this weekend...

valentine '10...

i have a valentine's project for you. i call this a lotus box. i saw something similar at a candy shop and decided that i could make it myself. the template took me a long while to figure out. the plan is the fill my little boxes with cookies, but i'll let you know later how that goes.

1. download and print the below image. it should be almost 8"x8", so you can print it on an 8.5"x11" card stock paper.
2. cut out the shape along the solid black lines, don't forget the slit on the gray petals.
3. place the printed side face down, and bring the short petals up to meet each other.4. bring up one of the gray petals and pull the fan part of the short petals though the slit on the gray petal.5. bring up the opposite gray petal and over the other petal, pull the fan part through. you don't even need to fold anything. i might punch a hole through the fan to tie a ribbon too. have fun filling your boxes with little goodies!

i've been working on a bunch of freelance projects, but i had some family time this weekend. we went on a one day tour of Santa Barbara. it wasn't a great tour, but we saw pelicans on Stearn's Wharf.
i like the colors on the birds. maybe i can use their palette for something some day.

jaqk...

i am so smitten with JAQK cellars and their signature playing cards. they're a newish wine company infused with the idea of "play a little." i saw and was fascinated by some of their graphic design work last year, then i panicked when i lost the link. when i found the link again, i immediately ordered two packs of playing cards, and sometime this year a friend is going to get one of their bottles of wine for their birthday.i said i was smitten, and i mean it right down to the little sticker label, the letterpress box and the metallic inks. alright, so normal people don't take twenty plus pictures of their playing cards, but these follow the company concept so well with beautiful graphic details. love.

my heart...

for christmas, my sister gave me a new moleskin sketchbook and twelve tubes of acrylic paint, almost all individually wrapped. my boyfriend gave me a little wooden mannequin and whole stack of blanks canvases, all different sizes. so obviously, my new year's resolution is to paint more!

i haven't planned anything for the bigger canvases yet. just for fun though, my boyfriend bought a pack of tiny 3.5" x 2" canvases and we had a mini art session...
after i painted my heart for him, i thought i might start a simple series of red, black, and white paintings.
