my heart...

for christmas, my sister gave me a new moleskin sketchbook and twelve tubes of acrylic paint, almost all individually wrapped. my boyfriend gave me a little wooden mannequin and whole stack of blanks canvases, all different sizes. so obviously, my new year's resolution is to paint more!

i haven't planned anything for the bigger canvases yet. just for fun though, my boyfriend bought a pack of tiny 3.5" x 2" canvases and we had a mini art session...
after i painted my heart for him, i thought i might start a simple series of red, black, and white paintings.

how friggin awesome! i want to make one now. this is by George W Hart, it was kind of a mathematical project.

rainy gallery hopping...

a couple friends and i bundled up saturday and braved the rain for a night of gallery hopping. first we went to Dan Goodsell's Mr. Toast mini art show at Monkeyhouse Toys in Silverlake.
this was one of our favorites...then we had dinner all the way in Long Beach so we could drop off a friend at the Long Beach airport. after that we headed to Culver City. it was opening night for Scott Belcastro at LeBasse Projects.this is a detail of the piece Snow Castle. the textures on his paintings were mind boggling.

we stopped by the Whole 9 Gallery on the way to Corey Helford's Multiplane group show. photos of the works at the Multiplane show do not do them justice. a ridiculously impressive list of artists were given a panel, 2 glass panes, and a frame to layer the final product. a lot of the artists showed up for opening night; it was pretty festively crowed in the gallery.
one of our favorite pieces was by Nathan Spoor. he took advantage of the layers really well. i also really liked Glen Barr's use of the transparency.

ornament exchange kit...

the ornament exchange idea is very simple.
you basically ask people to bring a wrapped ornament, preferably around the same price point, maybe $5. label all the ornaments with a number, then have the people that brought an ornament pick a number to receive a new ornament.
this is the sign up sheet; you can cut it in half. before your holiday party have people sign up on the left side so you can gauge how many people will participate. on the day of the party, used the numbered side on the right to keep track of the number people pick for an ornament.
this is the number sheet for corresponding the ornaments to their new owners. there's two sets of numbers: one goes on the wrapped ornament, the other is for people to draw their number. print it on a sticker sheet to turn them into stickers, or print on regular paper and tape the numbers on.

this book is the result of the ark project. it's an illustrative encyclopedia; 210 artists from around the world illustrated animals from their home country...i love the concept. now, who can i buy this book for?

thanksgiving weekend 09...

my dad signed us up to bring fruit salad for our family thanksgiving potluck dinner. these are my materials...
and this is my definition of fruit salad. my sister also made some great garlic mashed potatoes.i didn't do much over the weekend. mostly i ran errands around the house and lounged at my boyfriend's place. he had a box of fresh picked fruit from his back yard filled with persimmons and this busted pomegranate.this is my favorite cake in the world. literally. my mother brought back 20 cakes from China for me!

i trust you ate a lot over thanksgiving weekend? so now you might need the tank chair to roll you around after all that turkey...pharrell willams designed another chair to just as much criticism and blog coverage. it comes in a variety of colors and textures. i like it; it amuses me.
